Molly Gunn(Brittany Murphy) is the daughter of a deceased rock legend. She has never had to work, as she has more than enough money in her trust fund to carry on living the rock and roll princess life to which she has become accustomed. However, one day her money disappears when her manager steals it, and Molly is forced to do something she has never even dreamed of? she must get a job!
After various interviews and an unsuccessful stint working in a department store, Molly ends up being hired as a nanny for a precocious nine year old girl named Ray Schleine (Dakota Fanning). Ray is the often ignored daughter of a music executive Roma (Heather Locklear) and has learnt to get on with her life just as she wants to. The pair couldn?t be more different; Molly is a funloving girl who des not act her twenty two years, and Ray is an uptight control freak.
They clash as soon as they meet, and temper tantrums (from Molly) and control issues (spouting from Ray?s need to control Molly) follow. Both of them have their own issues to deal with; Molly gets let down by her boyfriend Neal (Jesse Spencer) and Ray feels lonely and neglected. As they spend more time together, Molly learns what it is to become an adult, whilst teaching Ray to become a child, and they realise you can find your best friend where you least expect.
