Arthur Dent gets up one day to discover that his home is going to be demolished soon to make way for a freeway. Not long after this, he receives the slightly more distressing news from his friend Ford Prefect that the Earth itself is about to be demolished to make way for an intergalactic freeway. But luckily for Arthur, Prefect believes he knows a way out… Introducing Dent to the wonders of the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" – a book he is researching - Prefect and Dent are soon stowaways on a spaceship that escapes just as Earth is being blown to smithereens... |
To attempt to explain the rest of the plot would only serve to confuse you; needless to say the greatest adventure of Arthur Dent’s life begins the same day that his world is destroyed. During his journey through the galaxy, Dent meets a host of amazing people / creatures / robots. For starters there’s Zaphod Beeblebrox, played with huge energy by the hilarious Sam Rockwell; Then there’s the film’s main female lead, Tricia McMillan (aka Trillian) played by Zooey Deschanel. However, some of the films best characters are the minor parts – Bill Nighy puts in a great performance as Slartibartfast, and Stephen Fry voices the Guide in his usual dry manor to great effect. |
As Hitchhikers fans will well know, Adams had a habit of making additions to story every time it appeared in a new form (including – so far - a radio series, an album, a novel, a television series, a computer game, a stage show and a comic book!) and the film is no exception. The main new addition in this latest incarnation is John Malkovich’s character, Humma Kavula, leader of a religious cult. The relationship between Trillian and Dent has also been tweaked slightly – supposed to make you care more about the characters, although producers have assured fans that it won’t turn the movie in to a sloshy romance. |
The movie is based upon the famous Douglas Adams novels, and any fan will know that the four sequels are also ripe for conversion in to movies. The first film is hardly out of the editing suite but people are already discussing Adam’s second Hitchhiker movie – The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. Obviously the likelihood of a sequel will depend on the success of the first movie, but the future does look bright for Arthur Dent and friends. |
