Reprising the role that first propelled him into the limelight, Vin Diesel stars as the enigmatic anti-hero Richard B. Riddick in the new science fiction action-adventure epic, ‘The Chronicles Of Riddick’. The film is the sequel to 2000s ‘Pitch Black’ and continues the story from where it left off.

Riddick, having become a fugitive, has spent the last five years on the move among the forgotten worlds on the outskirts of the galaxy, eluding mercenaries bent on collecting the bounty on his head. As he skips world one more time, Riddick comes to find himself on planet Hellion. The planet is peaceful and home to a progressive multicultural society known as the Elementals. With its suggestive name we can guess that this is not going to be the case for much longer. Sure enough, the planet is invaded by the Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), a despot who targets humans for subjugation with his army of alien warriors known as necromongers.

The peerless Dame Judi Dench plays Aereon, the ghost like representative of the Elemental people. She turns to Riddick for help in defeating this new threat to the future of the Elemental world. But the threat posed by Marshal and his alien force extends beyond the world of Hellion. For Marshal has a grander plan to wage the tenth and perhaps final crusade in a bid for galaxy wide domination.

Where ‘Pitch Black’ was perhaps slightly subtler in its construction and plotline, what ‘The Chronicles Of Riddick’ lacks here it makes up for elsewhere with amazing special effects that bring to life distant planets and harsh, unforgiving landscapes. Vin Diesel, although not the most versatile of actors, brings his physique and his throaty elocution to a role that thankfully requires a lot of physical exertion and shouting. It’s worth seeing just for the peculiarity of him and Judy Dench on the screen at the same time.
