Jennifer Lopez is Charlotte “Charlie” Cantillini. Though beautiful and intelligent, Charlie cannot find the right man no matter how hard she tries. Then she meets Kevin (Michael Vartan) – successful, handsome, caring…and available! After just a few months of dating, there’s not a single sign of imperfection. At long last Charlie has found a flawless man. Kevin proposes. Everything is perfect … well, almost perfect.
With Kevin comes Viola (Jane Fonda), Charlie’s future mother-in-law, who does not approve of this whirlwind romance. Charlie, in her opinion, will never be good enough for her son. Viola is more than possessive; she’s absolutely possessed with keeping her apron strings around Kevin. And she’ll do anything to derail this marriage.
When it’s clear that Kevin and Charlie are in love and are not going to change their marriage plans, Viola has a “change of heart,” or rather a change of tactics. She volunteers to plan the wedding. Kevin is oblivious to his mother’s scheming, but Charlie knows what Viola is up to – sabotage – and decides to fight fire with fire.
Soon Charlie and Viola are locked in a hilarious and increasingly outlandish battle of wills. What begins as a series of insults and practical jokes quickly escalates to full-blown warfare. Things reach a breaking point at the wedding ceremony itself where Viola and Charlie end up in a classic catfight.
