Percy Jones (Mac) has always taken great pride in the knowledge that just like all fathers, when it comes to his family he is always right. When his precious daughter Therese (Saldana) announces that she will be bringing home her new boyfriend to meet the folks, Percy does what any man (and bank loan officer) in his position would do, and run’s a credit check on Simon (Kutcher). Whilst every boy Theresa has dated so far has failed to live up to Percy’s expectations, initial signs are good for Simon. As a successful young stock broker, he looks very good on paper, so Percy is finally looking forward to meeting the young lad.

However, whilst Percy is imagining his daughter’s new beau to be a dazzling combination of Denzel Washington, Colin Powell and Tiger Woods, his background checks have failed to tell him one important (in his opinion) factor – Simon is white. So having met Simon, Percy begins a hilarious series of interrogations, where he attempts to expose Simon for the unfit partner he assumes he will be for his daughter.

If the premise of this movie seems familiar, it’s because it is actually a remake (or ‘re-imagining’ as they tend to call them these days!) of the classic Spencer Tracey movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Following a trend in Hollywood of late, the makers of Guess Who have turned the tables on the original by having Bernie Mac taking over the Tracey role and Kutcher the role made famous by Sidney Poitier.
