A young Texan man, John Grady, played by Matt Damon is disillusioned by the changes he has seen in Texas since the Second World War and decides to set out with his friend john Grady Cole played by Henry Thomas on an idyllic quest to find what remains of true cowboy country unaffected by modern society. Accompanied by a young hanger on Jimmy Blevins played by Lucas Black they head for Mexico and adventure…
This coming of age film doesn't quite fit into any genre. It is disappointing as an epic Western and although there is a romance between John Grady and Alejandra (Penelope Cruz) with lots of smouldering looks but no real convincing passion between them which leaves you wondering what the films real point is.
This is visually a very attractive film and is romantically trying to cling to the end of an era but unfortunately although the scenery and the actors are very pretty by the end of the film you still don't really care what happens to any of them.
The best performance is by Matt Damon, who while battling with a wishy-washy storyline that isn't entirely sure where it's going manages to be a convincing and believable character.
