Based on a true story, Against the Ropes tells the tale of Jackie Kallen (Ryan) a woman who somehow defied all odds and went on to become a boxing manager, and even ended up guiding several successful careers, including those of middleweight champ James Toney, as well as other greats such as Bronco McKart and Thomas Hearns.

A Jewish woman born into a boxing family in Detroit, Jackie was determined to go as far as she could in the tough and male dominated world of boxing. Her involvement in the boxing world from an early age made it easy for her to spot a winner when she saw one. As soon as she sets eyes on Luther Shaw (Epps), she sees the raw potential that he has, despite him being a little rough around the edges. Determined to become the first recognized lady of the boxing world, she must first convince this young lad to leave the ghetto and follow his dream. She enlists veteran trainer Felix Reynolds (Charles S. Dutton) to help them. As time goes on, the bond between Jackie and Luther starts to grow, as the two of them embark upon the tough struggle to reach the top. Striving for success at every step of the way, Jackie makes sure that she puts in everything that she can to help this young man, as well as proving herself.
