Vanity
Fair is the story of Becky Sharp, a poor girl growing up in 1840's
London who defies her poverty-stricken background and ascends the
social ladder alongside her best friend, Amelia. Written by William
Thackeray, the novel is now being made into a film by Mira Nair,
director of the award winning Monsoon Wedding.
From
the 9th to the 13th of June, Hollywood descended upon Bath as Nair's
adaptation of Thackeray's Vanity Fair was shot in the streets and
houses around the area. Stars including Reese Witherspoon (Legally
Blonde; Cruel Intentions), James Purefoy (A Knight's Tale;
Resident Evil), Jim Broadbent (Moulin Rouge; Gangs of New
York), Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit; Brazil),
Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill; The Shipping News) and Gabriel
Byrne (The Usual Suspects; Ghost Ship) attracted massive
crowds while filming scenes in the Roman City, and here at Unreel
we were lucky enough to get some photos on the set. What follows
is a small selection of the shots we took, so sit back and enjoy...
