The Sweetest Thing

Cameron Diaz – 'Christina'

On The Film's Dialogue

You have girls saying things that girls always say but you never see in movies. You never see relationships with girls where they're just being honest and open and blatant with one another, in a very fun and casual way. When girlfriends know one another so well, they don't have to put anything on. They don't have to pretend to be anybody else, they just speak their minds. It's how girls talk there were so many raw, funny, crazy, just straight out, real situations in it that I just thought that it would be so much fun to do. Basically, this is my 'I wanna go and have a good laugh film.' So, we came out and, and that's what we've been doing, you know, just trying to make funny situations.

On Her Character, Christina

My character Christina is in the place where she's just out having a good time. You know she's been in a serious relationship, now she's independent, she’s having fun. She gets to the place where she just sort of settled in. You just think, 'Oh, this is how things are going.' And you don't pay attention to the fact that there's more to life.

On Her Character, Pt. 2

She's not grounded she has these moments where she can't make up her mind. She takes a little bit more convincing to get things going, she's not as ready to grab hold of things as Courtney is.

On Her Character And The Other Girls

She has fears, like everyone. She's afraid of finding out what life is about, she's definitely about going out there and living it. She's at a point in her life, where I think all three of these girls are, where they're trying to make that leap into another place. They're kind of like, 'Okay, we've been doing this for a while now. This has been our life.' And at some point, you have to grow. There's something that pushes you into maturity and into another phase of your life.

On Co-star Christina Applegate

Christina Applegate is a lovely, amazing, talented, funny, and beautiful woman. She's my best friend in this movie and my very good, dear friend, in life. She is so perfectly timed with comedy and so witty and quick. It's just been so much fun to be friends with her.

On Co-star Selma Blair

Selma is just a comic genius. She's the most fearless actor I've worked with, comedy-wise. She will do anything. She will put herself out there and she never says, 'No.' You know, she just does it.

On Director Roger Kumble

Roger's a very funny man, he comes up with things that you just go, 'Where the heck? I mean, honestly, where did he come up with that? And it always works. Even on the times that you're just going, 'Okay, Roger.' He gets comedy and he can always find the button.

Christina Applegate – 'Courtney'

On The Story

We are on our way, we are on a mission to find Mister Right, or who we think is Mister Right. I'm the good girlfriend who says, 'Come on. Get up out of bed. Let's go. Let's go. I see something there. Let's go.' Then, you know, disaster ensues.

In The Story, Pt. 2

She's still in that place where she doesn’t want to admit that she could fall in love. I don't think she wants to admit that she could be vulnerable to a lot of heartbreak. At this point, it's just about having a lot of fun just playing with men and playing with the whole idea of what men really do with us, which is: You know, you know what you all do with us. So, I think that's where the tables are sort of turned in this movie a little bit. These chicks are acting like men and it's really pissing men off everywhere we go.

On How She Related To The Script
I read the script and went, 'Oh my God. That's me and all of my girlfriends.' It's being able to finish people's sentences. Just knowing what they're feeling and playing off of that, they're silly and they're wild and they're free in so many ways. I love that dynamic of the relationships.

On The Film's Appeal

They've always said that women's conversations are a lot dirtier than men's conversations. It's true. This is women's conversation as vulgar as you could possibly ever imagine. It’s really neat that we get to show that side of it. Then there's the great physical comedy. I mean, you've got Selma and Cameron and you've got to utilize their wonderful physical comedy. They're really like the Lucys. So you get to do all of that in this movie, and be cute at the same time, it's wonderful.

On The Film's Appeal, Pt. 2

Hot chicks dancing. Cameron Diaz in a red dress. I think enough said. And it's a funny movie. I mean, there's just so many wonderful things that happen, which are these incredibly comic moments.

Selma Blair – 'Jane'

On Why The Film Appeals To Her

I read the script and I thought it was hysterical. I knew Cameron was attached, I've known her for a couple of years and Nancy wrote a great script. Of course, I worked with Roger on Cruel Intentions, and so I was dying, to get to do this movie. And, I'd play any part. I'd play a hag in a door post, for Roger

On Cameron Diaz And Christina Applegate

This has been a blessed two months working with Christina and Cameron. And I know my life is so much better for knowing Cameron. Truly, she is the most caring, professional, wonderful, beautiful girl I've ever met. I mean, that's a huge thing to say and I'm saying it, she's amazing. And so is Christina. They're generous and they just want it to be fun. Cameron wants more than anything for this to be fun, and every day to be a reminder that we're having fun and having a great time and making people laugh. And so, hopefully, we will.

On Director Roger Kumble

I love Roger, of course. He's the one that gave me my first studio job. I'd done a bunch of stuff before that, that never really made it anywhere. Roger is truly one of my dearest friends, so it's a gift working with him. You know, Roger said, 'I discovered you.' So, obviously, he's hoping that I'll be a big deal one day. So, thanks, Roger.

On The Script

I think this script makes no apologies, and I think that’s great. I think it's ridiculous, I think it's a little bit UN-P.C. without trying to hurt anybody's feelings. You know we're really just trying to make people laugh. And sometimes you get into some scary territory with that because sometimes you have to step on some nerves to a laugh. But I don't think there's anything in there that would ever hurt somebody. So, I loved it.
