SOLARIS
George Clooney Interviews

George Clooney’s latest film ‘Solaris’ opens in the UK today. It is a remake of the 1972 Russian existentialist science fiction film which many regard as a classic of the calibre of Kubrick’s ‘2001’. The remake, which is directed by Clooney’s long-time collaborator Steven Soderbergh, is produced by ‘Aliens’ and ‘Terminator’ director James Cameron.

Although it is ostensibly a sci-fi extravaganza, both Soderbergh and its stars are at pains to stress that the film will appeal to all sorts of people, on many levels, with the love story between Clooney’s character Dr Kelvin and his dead wife (played by Natascha McElhone) at the core of the film.

Mr Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1961. The son of TV newscaster Nick Clooney, he had spent much of his childhood in and around the TV studios, which probably had a great deal to do with his choice of career. Although he became a broadcast journalist, to avoid competition with his father, he quit his job as after a short time.

Turning to his studies, he attended Northern Kentucky University and also tried out for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. But it was acting that was the direction that he followed when his cousin, actor Miguel Ferrer, got him a small part in a feature film. Following that he moved to LA in 1982 and tried for a whole year to get another role.

Clooney's first steady role was in the medical TV sitcom "E/R" (1984) that was based in Chicago and co-starred Elliott Gould, Mary McDonnell and Jason Alexander. Coincidentally, ten years later a role in another medical TV series "ER" (1994) which is also based in Chicago took him into another league of stardom as both the show and he himself proved very, very popular with the public.

Over the last ten years, Clooney has appeared in some classic roles (not least a manic Seth Gecko in the wonderful ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’ and a fairly uninspired Bruce Wayne/Batman in ‘Batman & Robin’) and his hit films have turned him into one of Hollywood’s superstars and most important players.

In 1996 he was chosen by People magazine as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world and the following year voted Sexiest Man Alive and Best Dressed Male Television Star.

His newfound status has allowed him to get some projects going that otherwise may not have found favour in the usual Hollywood manor, and apparently he committed himself to the interesting ‘O Brother, Where Art Thou?’ before even reading a script.

As well as the film ‘Solaris’, his other recent outings have included the ensemble comedy ‘Welcome To Collinwood’ and his directorial debut ‘Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind’.

With the world as his oyster, his upcoming projects include ‘Intolerable Cruelty’, the story of a revenge-seeking gold digger who marries a womanizing Beverly Hills lawyer with the intention of making a killing in the divorce. The film also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Geoffrey Rush and Billy Bob Thornton. He is also due to star in a sequel to the highly successful ‘Oceans Eleven’, ‘Ocean’s Twelve’, once again reuniting with his friend, and favourite director Mr Soderbergh.
